Zukav idealizes shamanism Even planets are on the same ladder seeking higher consciousness. The earth itself is composed of other merging consciousnesses “that we call countries, societies and nations.” Nations are aspects “of the personality of Gaia, the Earth’s soul, which itself is developing its personality and soulhood.” (Ibid. p. 114.).

The earth, as Gaia, “has agreed to interact with the human species, and to allow the development of this species to merge with its own consciousness. Part of this agreement can be understood as an agreement that matter will be cocreated upon this planet with the consciousness of the Earth. Since the Earth now has creative residents, it responds to their energy. Our species and the Earth form a mutual response system.” (Ibid. p. 115.).

Beyond gods, angels and planetary consciousness the journey then moves into pure light. Zukav admonishes that we are light. “The Light that flows through your system is Universal energy. It is the Light of the Universe. You give that light form.” ( Ibid. p. 106.).

“Every physical form as well as every nonphysical form is Light that has been shaped by consciousness. No form exists apart from consciousness. . . . Physical reality and the organisms and forms within physical reality are systems of Light within systems of Light, and this Light is the same Light as the Light of your soul.” (Ibid. p. 111.).

When Light awakens to its divine nature at the end of the journey, it realizes its supreme identity, to borrow a book title by Harvard Orientalist Alan Watts. Zukav invokes the timeless Hindu metaphor of the drop returning to the ocean after the long journey through Samsara:

“You have always been, because what it is that you are, is God or Divine intelligence, but God takes on individual forms, droplets, reducing its power to small particles of individual consciousness.... As the little form grows in power, in selfhood, in its own consciousness of self, it becomes larger and more Godlike. Then it becomes God.” ( Ibid. p. 186.).

Till this time comes, we must make do with the Earth School. That means relationships with other people, five-sensory and multisensory. And here is where the Oprah Winfrey crowd starts to feel good. Because though everyone wants to become God as soon as possible, this may be a way off. But higher spiritual/sensual relationships can be around the next corner.

Beyond Marriage Some of the sound bytes from Zukav’s book seem custom crafted to cause moments of awe when pronounced sagely on such shows as Oprah Winfrey. He covers America’s hottest topics—empowerment and relationships. And as this culture continues to deconstruct, the most saccharin promises about true relationships and personal power will warm any needy audience.

We live in the time of the lone predator, people using people with little loyalty and even less longevity of relationship. Then there is the healing after the cohabiting is over. Healing and public confession. Of course the latter is more geared to Sally Jesse Raphael, a show with endless public confessions of the most intimate thoughts and details.
